Fiona was sitting quietly in her bedroom, when she heard footsteps moving quickly up her staircase outside only to have her door yanked open and the unmistakable sound of her little cousin Chryssie yelling up the stairs. Fiona got up from her seat, where she was examining a recent piece of her work and tucked it in behind a blank canvas.
“Fiona! Fiona! Fiona! Are you here?!?”
“Aye! Upstairs, as always!”
“Fiona! Guess what happened?” Chryssie screeched as she scampered up the steps.
“Hmm, you left the house and said daddy knew where you were, when I am willing to bet he has no idea you or your brother has left the house?”
“Actually, Daddy knows we went to Aegis, because I told him I was going here to keep an eye on Chryssie and make sure she did not get into trouble.” stated Owen matter-of-factly.
“Well then, at least someone said something, otherwise I would have had to send Cassie to your house with a message, and we all know how she loves being disturbed from a nap” Fiona motioned to the little pink dragonling, perched on her pillow snoozing away happily.
“Yep, she does not like it very much.” the twins said together.
“Alright then, since daddy knows where you are. What happened that has you all worked up?”
“Welllll, you bemember how I told you about the other sneeze I met last week? The one who looked like me, but bigger?”
“Aye, the other eshu ye met last week. The one ye said was talkin’ to my mom. What about her?”
“She telled me a trick to help my story-telling. To makes it better, and stuffs. And she said I has to practice. Have to practice a lot to get better.”
“Well, practice does help someone improve something, much like it helps to practice the magic that you learn with Maya. Which, I hope you still work on as often as possible, even though I know she has been busy.”
“Yes Fi fi I do practice. Buuuut, this will help me with my stories. Mekere saids that I can ask for help from the Dreaming place, and if I does something to appease the Dreaming, then it will help me feel my audience. That way, I kin tell if something about my story they don’t like and I kin fix it up to make it better.” Chryssie stated, hands sitting on her hips, trying to be an adult.
“And what do you have to do exactly to appease the Dreaming?”
“Well, well I uhm, I can do things, to do it. She said that I can wiggle my fingers out like this.” The young eshu swung her hands out and began to wiggle her fingers pointing around the room.
“Well now, you’re quite good at that. I wish ye luck on your endeavors darlin’. Tha’ magic seems a lot safer than the magic James was showing you. I like fire and all, just not in large destructive amounts”
“The fae lady tried to make Chryssie take an oath too.” Owen suddenly blurted out from where he was sitting playing with a horse and cart.
“Oh? Why do ye say tha’ lil’ ranger?”
“Because, she even said it was an oath. She tried to make Chryssie promise to never tell a lie to her.”
“Ah, I see. Well, not lying is one thing. Promising someone you will never lie to them, is different. Ye did nae make the promise did ye Chrys?” Fiona looked the little girl over, focusing on her eyes, holding her gaze with her own questioning gaze.
“No I did not. I wasn’t gonna do it neither, not without checkin’ with Aunty or Daddy.”
“That’s a good girl. Please do make sure ta check with an adult first. Faery magic can involve tricks of sorts.”
“But Fiona, you are ENCHANTED with faery magic. It can’t be that tricksy.” Chryssie said, staring at Fiona.
“Aye, I am. However, if I were to stop bein so, I would run the risk of forgetting every fae I have known since being enchanted. You see, there are tricks to faery magic.”
“I knew it!” Owen said excitedly “I told you Chryssie! I knew they was tricksy!”
“Quiet Owen! I did not ask you! Sheesh, brothers. Sometimes they can be so annoying. Sometimes not. But sometimes super yes!”
“Sisters! They can be annoying too!”
Fiona smiled and shook her head, watching the two young ones. She pulled a small canvas from behind her chair and looked it over quietly, and then she felt it, a set of eyes looking at her expectantly. Fiona looked up and saw Chryssie standing there waiting patiently.
“Fiona,” Chryssie said quietly, “when we was out, we sawed your before boyfriend. The Bruce guy. He, he comed back. It was him, the one from your pictures and your stories. Looked just like him, but, he was older. He was in the house just a little bit down from here, the new one that was builded not too long ago.”
Fiona paused before saying anything, weighing her next words carefully. She got up and went to where Cassie sat, slowly awakening from her nap. The young woman whispered instructions to Cassie and the dragonling took a few moments for it all to register, then she trumpeted her approval and swooped down and around the two children almost immediately. Chryssie and Owen giggled in delight and began chasing the dragonling around the upper levels of Fiona’s house.
Fiona took a few moments to prepare herself then she began to descend the stairs a few at a time. Passing Dev’s workshop, she peeked in and saw he was still working on some late project of his.
“Dev? Devy? I need a favour please?”
“Aye missy, wha kin good ole Dev do for ye this fine night? It is a beautiful night isn’t it? The rain pitter pattering away and all.”
“Aye Dev, a good night it is. I need ye ta stay later and watch after the two upstairs who are playing chase the dragonling. In turn, I will get Kat to make those special rolls you like so much, the cheesy ones.”
“Hmm, I dunno, you could just be pulling my leg. But alright, sold to the lady who promises the hot buns!”
Fiona giggled a moment then turned, thanking him again as she left and made her way towards the house instructed by her cousin. It was a rather beautiful house, and her thought was reaffirmed as she knocked on the door and the door opened into a beautiful sitting room, where she saw James and Bruce and another person sitting, one she recognized as an eshu.
“Hey Fiona” Bruce said from where he was beginning to stand
“Bruce! Yer here, again. You left me, with no word of when or if you would come back.”
“I had to, I had things…to do. Had to help dad and Hijo.”
Fiona’s blood was growing warm very quickly with the thoughts that began to flood her mind. She began wanting to ask and yell so many things at him. The man in front of her now had just dropped everything and gone off in search of finding out who believed some pastry thing was better with or without a hole in it.
“I will nae have this argument in someone else’s house, nae here, nae now.” Her attention turned to Mekere who was sitting quietly in a seat, watching the scene unfold before her. “I apologize, miss. I did nae come here to cause a disturbance. I am Fiona Kanath, artist. I live just north of here, northwest to be exact”
Mekere smiled and got up, introducing herself with a sweeping bow “And I am Dame Mekere Sorae ni Fiona, Court Raconteur to Her Majesty, Queen Silvara Takissis ni Fiona.”
“So yer the one my lil cousin just talked my ears off about. Well I appreciate ye teachin her something non fire and explosive related. It is a definite change ta her previous teaching from James. And she seems to have taken a liking to you.”
“And I to her. I hope to continue to be able to see her.”
“I am sure ye will be able to. She visits these parts often enough.”
Fiona sat and spoke with the Eshu and then Mekere had asked Fiona if she could commission a piece of work. A request made by the Queen herself. Fiona had smiled and nodded and said she would be happy to do so, and asked what she needed done. Mekere explained that the request was a landscape of the Aegis area. The young girl thought a few moments and explained that it would take some time, and would be more than one piece, but it was possible to do. Mekere then excused herself saying she had things to do before the night ended.
Fiona nodded and decided it was time to show Bruce where she had taken up residence in the past year. She decided it was a good idea to bring James with her, so he could not cause any more havoc. At least, in her line of vision, he could do very little in the way of destruction.
She showed Bruce around her house, and they spent some time in her garden. She found out he was married and had a child. He had turned into a fine man while he had been away. She was genuinely happy for him, although something inside her hurt fiercely. It took every thread of her being, to keep herself composed in his presence. Some time passed and then she excused herself, saying she had things to do before turning in for the night. Bruce said something about returning to his wife. She wished him safe travels and told him about Que’s being open the following night. He said he would try to make it.
Once inside the safety of her home, the warmth of her bed, Fiona curled up and cried quietly for a few painstaking hours, before succumbing to the exhaustion that filled her body.
“Fiona! Fiona!
