Traveling about the Realms in the day are not ideal times for one accustomed to darkness, but when the situation dictates there is little choice but to comply. The simple errand of forging diplomatic ties has much deeper implications than what is seen on the surface. One false move, or a misspoken word can destroy a trade route for years to come. It was for building foundations that the Drow from the House of Poisoning and the Shadow Moore Tavern came to call on quiet Elf from Winters Rose Brewery and Bistro.
Before moving to Magencia the Shadow Moore had been sold to Lebrun for his Bistro. The trade had been a good one, and the relationship had started on a good foot. With the small parcel of new clothing for his recently acquired farm hands the friendship would be set on a much more firm foundation.
He hired a young couple fresh from the hill country and eager to earn their way in the lands of Big City life, where the Big City was is yet a mystery. They had no idea the sweet aroma of their innocence sent wafting through the breezes. The lass, fair and lovely with bright eyes and shoulder length copper red hair, proved to be a temptation to the Newly Awakened Kindred who happened to be passing old grounds.
Alone in her duties and chores on the farm, no cares in the world, she was unaware of the sinister danger that lurked in the shadows. A cool breeze blew open the gate and rustled leaves, causing her farm animals to shift in uneasy alert. Not knowing what to do, she opened the door to the cabin and went inside, unwittingly allowing the silent shadow in as well. His cool breath and ice cold touch on her skin made her jump. When she tried to flee she found the door to be locked tight against her shaking fingers. The face that appeared from the mist and shadows she would never be able to identify, but the glowing red eyes burned in her memory like hot embers from a dying fire.
As swiftly as the face appeared it was gone again. No warning or reason it just vanished, but not before placing a cold hand square on her chest leaving a lingering weight firmly rooting her feet to the floor. The door opened and was left open to ensure in her mind that she had been invaded and was no longer safe within these borders.
Her terror over took her and left her crumpled in a corner sobbing and desperate to hide from unknown forces she did not understand. So distraught was she that when the Master of the Grove entered she blindly and savagely attacked him out of fear for her own well being. Thankfully, for him, he over powered her wild frenzy and was able to hold her until she quieted. After telling him of her encounter, through sobs and shaking incoherent descriptions, he was able to surmise the attack to be something of a supernatural power at work.
Offering her some wine and a bit of stew to settle her mind and body he escorted her to a nearby Inn to remain in safety while he returned to the cabin and summoned the ancient magic of the woods. A small spell, in comparison, yet powerful enough to keep would be attackers at bay, and reveal those who would mean to walk in the shadows, he uttered the words of warding all around the foundations of the home and garden. It would take a few days to be in full effect and at its maximum potency but then the security of the inhabitants would be secure.
~*~
Days later not far from the Bistro a happy couple well acquainted with the area, but not so much the change of management to the establishment, stumbled into the garden full of glee and intoxicated by each other’s presence. The danger that cloaked them they were unaware until far too late.
