The next few days passed in a blur. Storms and high winds plagued our progress greatly. So much so that we had to seek shelter at a small rocky island fate luckily placed in our path during a time of a lull in the storm instead of during the squall. We had no sooner secured the ship, dropping anchor and mooring lines tied to whatever we could than the winds kicked up again and the tides came in, leaving us landbound.
Once again though, providence seemed to have its hand on us and the island was riddled with sea caves, carved out by eons of tides crashing and wearing away the stone. It didn't take long before we were dragging our soaked bodies into a low dry cave full of the evidence of a hundred sea birds come and gone over and over.
that night as the thunder crashed overhead and the lightning lit up the cave in blinding brilliant flashes over an over, I lay on my back on the cold floor, staring up a the ceiling. As another flash filled my vision with blue light, suddenly she was there, leaning over me, her eyes softly glowing as she stared at me. I startled, jumping but not crying out. Shes so quiet, how I'm still not really sure. I sat up and grabbed her arm, pulling her outside into the rain. She glared at me, as I knew she would, but I begged her to just trust me. I had found something, and I couldn't wait to show her.
Crossing the rocky beach was much harder in the dark than it had been in the gloom of earlier. The rain slicked stones jostled and shifted under my boots as I helped her towards the suprise. Reaching the mouth of a small cave, we entered and she gave me a look that expressed both intrigue and suspicion. I just smiled innocently and pulled her down the passage that had been made smooth by weather and water. Our footsteps echoed down the passage, meeting the sound of trickling water.
The passage opened into a small cavern, and I watched as her eyes lit up.
Let me try to describe this, though my feeble attempts at putting it into words won't do it nearly any justice.
On the southern wall a small waterfall fell from an height unseeable encased in darkness. It fell into a pool shaped rather like a large bean, with tall plants taking advantage of the shelter growing haphazardly around its edge. The water in the pool was deep from years of being under the waterfall. I pulled a small candle and a flint from my pocket and lit a small flame. I found a small pile of driftwood and laid the candle down. The dry old wood lit up, the flames lapping hungrily at the logs. The whole cavern glowed with a soft orangey light. She looked at me, awe on her face.
Pretending not to notice, I stripped off my shirt and kicked off my boots. Stretching, i dove into the pool. The water was cold but it felt good on my skin, the current swirling around me. Opening my eyes, I could see a few bleary small fish. Kicking back to the surface, I wiped the water from my face, noticing her sitting with her feet dangling in the water, watching me. I sunk under again, swimming behind the log she sat on. In one quick move, I pushed off the bottom and flew out of the water like a flying fish, grabbing her and pulling her back into the pool as she gasped. She struggled in my arms for a moment as we broke the surface.
she began to sputter and swear and pitch a fit, turning to face me and glare. I cut her off mid fit with a deep kiss, her face cupped in my hand, lifted towards mine. I swept a lock of wet hair from her eyes and held her close, the water swirling around us making small eddys. All the fight left her and we just let the moment take us in.
We spent the whole of that evening swimming, exploring the cave and watching the falls, talking about whatever came into our heads. I haven't smiled that much in the whole of my life, I don't think.
All too soon though, the inky midnight blue of the sky began to fade into a murky grey. Dawn was coming whether we liked it or not, atleast the storms had passed. Leaving me with one last kiss to linger on my lips, she slipped into the shadows. I sat on the log looking out over the churning pool until the sun had fully risen and I could hear the shouts of my crew as they searched for me, most likely fearing me dead. Pulling on my boots and grabbing my shirt, I made my way out of the hidden grotto utopia and back towards the ship as the men were untying the moorings.
I sincerely hoped she had gone back to the ship as we drifted away from the island and back out to open sea. We would make land soon...
