Deep in the forest, a small cottage nestled in a clearing. Wildflowers filled flowerbeds under the windows, and a little cobblestone walkway lead down to a small pond. Inside the cottage, a child's laughter could be heard. Tucker and Rianna Edmunds sat on the sofa, she snuggled in his arms as they watched their daughter, Aerinele, play on the floor with her toys.
A cloak covered stranger surveyed the fairy tale scene. With a grunt, the figure walked up to the door and knocked loudly, startling the little family inside.
"Ri, get Nelly and the dogs!" Tucker ordered, motioning for their cu sidhes to protect his wife and child. "Stay back." No one ever came around here.
"A lost traveler perhaps?" Ri asked, ushering her daughter into the kitchen.
"Not sure, love. Be on your guard." Tucker replied as another knock came through the door.
Looking out the window, all Tucker could see was a hooded person, possibly a woman by their stature. He opened the door, and grumbled as he stared into a face identical to his wife's.
"Nice tae see ya, too" his sister-in-law, Rowena, smirked to him. "Gonna le' me inside or wha'?"
"I'd say 'or what' but your sister would kill me" Tucker replied as he opened the door to let Rowena in. "To what do we owe the pleasure?"
Just then, Rianna called in from the kitchen. "Everything all right, love? Who is it?"
"Just Rowe" he replied. In a moment Rianna was running into the room, hugging her twin tightly.
"Rowe! What are you doing here?" she asked, excitedly. It had been some time since she had seen her sister, or anyone else from back home.
"Jus' came to see wha' was takin' ya so long tae come back!" Rowe snuffed, looking around the small cottage. "Plannin' on stayin 'ere forever?"
The thought had crossed Rianna's mind. There was no violence or politics in their little slice of heaven. It was so tranquil here. "We have everything we need here, Rowe" Rianna said, walking her sister over to the sofa. "Nelly is thriving. Tucker and I are very happy."
"Ya don' 'ave e'erythin 'ere, sis" Rowe pointed out. "Ain' no one for Nelly tae play wi' here."
At the mention of her name, Aerinele ran to her aunt and held up her arms "Weena! Weena!" she cried, trying to scramble onto her lap. Rowena grabbed her niece by her hands and lifted her onto her lap, smiling as the toddler stuck two fingers in her mouth and snuggled close.
"Well, that's not entirely true, sis" Rianna said, a gleam in her eye as she exchanged a knowing look with her husband. Tucker grinned, walking over to Ri proudly and slipping an arm around her.
Rowe arched a brow, then clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. "O' course...wha' else 'ave ya got tae do out 'ere?" she laughed.
Rianna and Tucker smiled, then turned to look at their daughter. "You know, we could probably go back, at least for awhile. Let Nelly get to know where she is from." Tucker said. Rianna bit her lip in thought and then nodded slowly. "Besides, I don't think you'll want to be here in the middle of nowhere when the time comes..." Tucker said softly, nodding toward her middle.
After a few days had passed, the Edmunds came to the decision that they would return to their homeland. Rianna and Tucker waved farewell to Rowena and Aerinele as they fastened a couple of bags onto their mounts. They decided it would be best to leave Nelly under Rowena's care as they searched for a new place to call home. Once they were settled in, Rowena would return with their daughter and they could begin the next chapter of their lives. Home.
